“The Frostfur Captives” recap (May 23, 2014)

Chamberlain Ambrus Valsin sends the party into the snow-covered hinterlands of Irrisen on a vital escort mission. Tasked with escorting a group of goblin prisoners from their camp to civilization for interrogation by the Pathfinder Society, the party must protect the captives not only from the beasts and hazards of the wilderness, but themselves.

The Party (playing in Tier 1-2)

– Enola, halfling rogue and twin-dagger combatant
– Feywin, gnome paladin and defender of the helpless
– Vilnax, halfling barbarian and mighty grappler
– Zhang Yu, human wizard and force missile sniper
– Mjollnir, human druid and summoner extraordinaire

Highs (mild spoiler alert)

– Excellent “crowd control” over the goblin detainees during the mission.  
– Zhang Yu has an up-close-and-personal experience with an Inflict Serious Wounds spell but makes his Will save and delivers some force missile “payback” in the next round.
– Enola gets dropped to exactly zero hit points and still manages to disengage from one fight, sneak past two warriors and finally deliver a key sneak attack in a separate combat before falling unconscious.  Fight’s not over until the hit points are negative!
– Vilnax, the “Halfling Ric Flair of the Northern Kingdoms”, not only grapples but pins an ice troll in front of an entire village.  Someone call the WWE!
– Once again, the APL VC shows up with an awesome two-page map for the final fight.  Thanks Luth!


– First combat highlights a lack of missile weapons.  Always bring that back-up short bow/crossbow!
– The Obscuring Mist spell sounds great in practice but can be a little tricky to actually use in combat.
– The GM rolls a natural 20, then rolls another natural 20 to confirm.  Where’s that dual-cursed oracle when you really need him/her?
– No one died, but a couple of reminders that 1st level characters are just one good shot away from sitting through the rest of the battle while rolling stabilization checks.  

   Overall, a great job by a team with solid tactical decision-making skills.    This Season three escort mission has lots of combat, but also requires a wide variety of skills for a successful completion.  Herding goblins is hard work, but with the right crew, it can be done without too much intimidation, threatening, egregious violence or any of other preferred tools for dealing with goblins.  Pro tip:  Bring ranged weapons and don’t forget to put some points in those social skills!
